German DBAG and competitors have grown freight traffic to the limit. A transport lobby estimates that German trains transported 337 million tonnes in 2006, an increase of 6,2% over 2005. In contrast to road transport, rail freight has increased since 2003 so that there is now a shortage of track, terminals and staff. Tonne-kilometres grew from 95,4bn in 2005 to 105,5bn.
