It's not ATSUI, it's the Cocoa textfield widget, which simply doesn't work properly for large text files. Unfortunately, every Cocoa text editor I have seen so far is using it - which is why I landed at Pepper.
Quartz font rendering for Carbon/Quickdraw apps is really easy - see http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1193.html
If that should become a feature of Pepper, I want it to be an optional one - I prefer the current (crisp) font rendering.
